SIDesign’s 2012 CoSIDA wrap up

I had been an SID for six years (full-time) and had never attended a CoSIDA convention. I began the 2011-12 school year as the SID at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas; so I was still officially a member. When I branched out on my own after the 2011 football season to start Sports Information Design – and eventually to full time in March of 2012 – oddly enough I decided this would be the year to go.

Kyle Robarts, owner of Sports Information DesignI would have been interested in attending some of the sessions just out of curiosity’s sake, especially those on social media, the exhibit hall was open during these key sessions, and I had to man my booth.

However, I enjoyed being amongst former colleagues who have now become potential customers, and hearing from new SID’s on their needs and perspectives of what they need to do business.

Much of what SIDesign offers has to do with the design and layout of printed materials. However, as SID’s know, depending on a budget and the stubbornness of coaching staff’s expectation, printed media guides are becoming a thing of the past. The industry is embarking on new challenges; online versions of media guides, record-book only publications, or simply using the variety of athletic web site providers to post all the pertinent information for the media are beginning to take over.

This does not discourage me, as there will still be a market for design, branding and appeal for items distributed to fans and alumni at games or gatherings. But, it will challenge me in the near future of how to stay relevant.

The other thing I learned quickly is the power of Twitter. In my personal life I have begun posting much more on Twitter than Facebook for my own account and my newly formed business accounts. Facebook has its advantages if you want to show off photos or portfolios, but I really believe Twitter is the best social media platform for the SID and media industry over Facebook.

Everything from my announcements about the free media-guide cover design, to my ejection from the ESPN reception for changing into jeans was re-tweeted throughout the week. I was a small part of the much larger and impressive feat of #CoSIDA12 trending nationally for the better part of three days.

If that doesn’t show you how powerful you can be with your fans and alumni base, I don’t know what will.

Networking is the obvious advantage of any convention, but I wanted to share the appreciation of the network that SIDesign experienced this week.

I want to say a special thank you to the following people:

Ron Fauss of Proforma Collegiate Solutions for letting me share, and at times hi-jack our booth. Ron was formerly of MultiAd and is committed to helping the departments committed to the printing of media guides and recruiting guides continue to produce these pieces at affordable rates. And now, luckily SIDesign gets to join in many cases with Ron and Proforma for the creative direction of those publications for departments that don’t have in-house designers.
Adam Ledyard, the SID at Judson University. Adam and I share a connection as former SID’s at McMurry University. Adam is one of those small college SID’s doing everything he can to stretch his minimal budget for a maximum benefit to his fan base. His relationship with The Rush (instant highlight service FREE to fans and SID’s – more on them later) shows he’s trying to stay on the cutting edge to make a more interactive experience for his fans. Adam also gets brownie points for complimenting SIDesign throughout the week J
Bob & Robby Kerch of The Rush – I met Bob & Robby this week (although I had spoken with Robby while SID at McMurry) and I believe that The Rush is something that many people are going to look back five or 10 years from now and wish they’d gotten in on the ground floor. In my interpretation, the company provides real-time highlights to your mobile phone that you can share. Their service will include everything from the pros (ideal for fantasy sports owners) to high schools. I think it would be an awesome tool for small-college SID’s who stream live events to get involved in engaging their fans in cutting edge technology. They could follow their small-college stars on Saturday and NFL quarterbacks on Sunday.
Jeff Rubin, Dave Meluni, Joe DeBenedictis & Chris Kirkegaard (Dustin Pedrioa look alike contest winner) of SIDEARM Sports – There was a time when I thought I should have been on payroll for the amount of referrals to SIDEARM after I initially signed up with McMurry in 2007. I have dealt with all four of these men on the phone and through email multitudes of times. They were always incredible to work with, and getting the chance to meet them and hang out with them at their reception was awesome. I feel like SIDEARM does everything well, and while their 582 clients speak for themselves, I won’t be surprised when they start landing SEC and BIG XII schools in the future; their versatility in web & mobile engagement and second-to-none design work give them a chance to be a monopoly in the business.
Greg Weghorst of the American Southwest Conference. Greg is a close friend and was / is the media relations contact for the ASC for which McMurry was a part. The Division III conference is a solid, well-run organization and Greg has been especially supportive of SIDesign since I left McMurry following the football season. He also sported the ever-stylish SIDesign polo Monday and served as a free billboard.

Finally, a congratulations to Michael Schroeder of Western Kentucky for winning the media guide cover design drawing. I hope to make the Hilltoppers proud with whichever sport they choose to let me create.

And most finally, thanks to all who stopped by the booth to find out more what SIDesign was about. I’d love to serve you and your athletic department in whatever way I can and provide relief in the middle of those 70-90 hour work weeks that are sure to be haunting you soon.

Please take the time to check out our web site to see what we’re about and look at a portfolio of SIDesign’s work. And, social media love is always appreciate on Twitter & Facebook!

Orlando in 2013! And I hope blue jeans are okay.

See you in St. Louis! SIDesign to hold drawing for free media guide cover design at CoSIDA!

Sports Information Design owner Kyle Robarts will be present at this weekend’s CoSIDA convention in St. Louis. Be sure and check out the booth at the exhibit hall. SIDesign will be teaming up with Ron Fauss of Proforma Collegiate Solutions for the week.

SIDesign will be conducting a drawing for a free media guide cover design at the convention. There are three ways to enter:
1) Sign up for the SIDesign E-Newsletter
2) “Like” SIDesign on Facebook (http://facebook.com/sportsinfodesign)
3) Follow SIDesign on Twitter (http://twitter.com/SIDesign2012).
If you do all three, your name / school’s name will be entered three times for the random drawing to be held on Tuesday on the last day of the convention.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, SIDesign is a company dedicated to the marketing and graphic design needs of sports organizations, athletes and coaches. Robarts is a former SID (McMurry University – Abilene, Texas / Asst. at Abilene Christian University – Abilene, Texas) and was in the field for 8.5 years before starting SIDesign in January of 2012.

In addition to publication design and layout, SIDesign builds custom web sites for individual athletes & coaches. For athletes, it’s a way to showcase their talent to the next level with a site to display highlights, biographical information and vital academic and athletic statistics for college and pro scouts. For coaches, SIDesign’s custom sites provides an enhanced recruiting tool giving prospects a chance to see the style, accolades and information about a coach’s respective program and individual personality. Coaches & athletes alike can integrate their social media outlets on their custom site as well as implement a blog feed so that they can easily keep viewers up to date on the latest happenings.

Finally, SIDesign can provide printing solutions from small-scale projects to-large-scale banners. Robarts has designed and created building-sized banners to dress up athletic facilities at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas (see video of examples), and most recently designed & printed a 9-banner project for D1 Sports Training in Abilene, Texas (see the full gallery here).

If you aren’t headed to CoSIDA, feel free to contact SIDesign for any needs you might have for the upcoming 2012-13 school year at info@sportsinfodesign.com or by phone at 325.669.3199.

Large Scale Printing Solutions for your university’s athletic department or sports organization!

A great way to publicize your athletic department and sports organization is to take advantage of large-scale printing. In six years of affiliation with McMurry University in the sports information office and marketing department, I was able to design and execute several solutions for the school to enhance visual appeal and attract students, alumni, fans and recruits. SIDesign can do the same thing for YOU at your school or sports organization! There is no limit to size; we created one banner with the McMurry athletics banner to face the football field and track that was 48 feet wide. It made a statement. And let’s be honest, some of our buildings that we operate from are old, faded and not very attractive. What better way to hide it than to slap graphic art over it? If you click on the photo above (or click here), you will find several examples of banners, decals, a mural, and a media backdrop that helped McMurry enhance its appeal to the media, prospective student-athletes and create a sense of excitement among staff and current student-athletes.

If your sports organization or university needs a step up from the plain brick walls, cinder block, or plain sheet rock, don’t hesitate to contact SIDesign to create a solution for you!

RMHoops.com > SIDesign can meet your basic web needs

Web design can mean many things. My skill set falls more into the “design” portion than the web. When people ask me, “do you do web sites?” The answer is yes, but there are levels to “doing” web sites. When I used to work with web design firms you had two primary departments working on a customer’s web site. You had the design group and the programming group. Both parties worked together to make sure that the design part fit within the system of the programmer’s part, which is generally the most essential.

A programmer takes care of the bells and whistles when it comes to functionality. Programmers can create online forms, create secure spaces for users to send information across the web to the web site owner without information being hacked. Programmers can create automated calendars for customers to place on their web site, article creators, and make it so that the “Average Joe” can operate a web site without having the knowledge of how to build.

I do not fall under the “programmer” category. As a designer, I try to layout and design how content will flow, but I do actually build the HTML (code that builds basic web sites) pages to create web sites for the customers. From there, a programmer can take what I’ve done and make it more interactive for the customer.

However, this does not mean that I cannot create web sites for customers with basic needs. A page with a solid look and information about your company / organization can easily be built. I can also provide basic features like embedding video, audio and allowing an interactive contact form for basic information to be exchanged from the public to the web site owner.

In addition, whatever I cannot “program” can almost always be outsourced. We can find solutions for you to link to other services that allow my pages to interact with more features that would have been built by a “programmer.”

You need to incorporate your brand and provide information to visitors to get to your other outlets as well.

Let SIDesign help with your Twitter facelift and take a look at our most recent work for the Rocky Mountain Hoop Review. Visit their twitter site for the full effect at http://twitter.com/rmhoopreview.
